Top 10 2015 Blog Posts: From SDN Robot Overlords to Gyrocopters to Nerd Pride

It’s human nature at the end of the year to look back and take stock of what happened. Here we highlight 10 of our most popular blog posts of 2015, covering everything from the passing of Leonard Nimoy to the growth of SDN to our CTO’s unexpected familiarity with a certain pop ditty.

1. OpenDaylight Lithium First Look: Our Distinguished Engineer Hari Ananthakrishnan continued to update us on OpenDaylight developments throughout the year, including this post about the strengths and weaknesses of the third version of the organization’s network controller software.

2. Spock Encouraged Geeks to “Live Long and Prosper”:
Leonard Nimoy’s passing in February led Brian Boyko to write this homage to him and how his character Spock contributed to our society in several ways, not the least of which was “nerd pride.”

3. Path-Aware Performance Management Is Finally Here: In this article Kris Olander, Sr. Technical Marketing Engineer, introduced our new Performance Explorer product – the first in the industry to correlate performance and latency metrics with path analytics – and provided a quick demo.

4. Managing the Robot Overlords of SDN: Brian Boyko tackled machine learning in this article and how, without better management, network engineers have good reason not to completely trust the automatic actions of SDN controllers.

5. All About That YANG at the 92nd IETF Meeting: In a blog post by our CTO Cengiz Alaettinoglu we learned two things: The importance of the YANG data model to SDN management and orchestration, and that he is up on pop culture (Yes, he came up with the title, which for the uninitiated is a play on Meghan Trainor’s hit pop song “All About That Bass”).

6. SDN Market Size Projections Exceed GDP of Ecuador: How big is the SDN market? No one knows for sure, but the estimates are “huge” as a certain presidential candidate might say!

7. Network Optics and Gyrocopters: Remember the guy who landed a one-person gyrocopter on the U.S. Capitol grounds last April? In this post, Brian Boyko likened his “successful” flight to the problem of not getting the right information to the right people at the right time in order to prevent or fix problems before they can cause damage.

8. SDN Power Users in 2015: Here Hari covered the OpenDaylight Summit held in Santa Clara, CA last summer and the uptick in operator and user sessions that discussed real-world SDN deployments using the OpenDaylight controller.

9. Will SIDR Succeed Where the IRR Model Failed?:
In this three-part series, our CTO compared and contrasted the IRR and SIDR security models as well as discussed the options for how the industry can secure the Internet’s routing system.

10. Enabling SDN Management in the WAN with New Platform & AppOur
list would be complete without the blog post that outlined one of our most important product developments of the year. VP of Product Management Matt Sherrod explained the industry’s need for SDN management and orchestration and how our new platform fills it.
