Addressing the SDN Management Gap at SDN/MPLS Conference

Packet Design CTO Cengiz Alaettinoglu will present a technical session during the 18th annual SDN/MPLS 2015 International Conference in Washington, D.C. next week. He will cover the need for service and policy aware SDN management and orchestration (outlined below). In addition, we will have a table at the event where Cengiz will demo new SDN technology that we are launching next week. These are our first SDN products, and Cengiz was of course instrumental in their development. If you are attending, please stop by and say hello. If you are not, stay tuned next week for details about our SDN products!

We are introducing our SDN analytics and automation platform designed to fill the management gap between SDN controllers and applications. It uses Packet Design’s unique real-time telemetry, analytics, path computation and optimization, and policy to enable intelligent provisioning of network assets. In addition, Cengiz and the team will show an SDN Traffic Engineering (SDN-TE) application we have built top of the platform, which will optimize and provision RSVP-TE tunnels based on available bandwidth and user-specified policies.

Here’s a quick description of the presentation Cengiz will give on Monday, November 16 at 11:00 EST.

Service and Policy Aware SDN Management and Orchestration

Networks today run many different services and applications. These services have different performance and policy requirements from the network than the services of the last decade. For example, one service provider provides short delay paths to a select set of high-revenue financial customers and it needs to measure delay across the links in its network and may segregate these customers’ paths from the rest of its customers. Another major service might be over-the-top video, such as Netflix and YouTube. This service has a video quality requirement, and if not met, may lead to customer churn. The service is very adaptive and can tune its bandwidth requirements to available resources. In this case, the service provider may provision for optimum video quality under normal network conditions and may want to tune the video quality down under link and router failures. This enables the service provider to not over-provision its network too much for handling failures. These, and many other services, are now carried over the same network. As a result, SDN management needs to become service aware by provisioning these services end-to-end, from the access and aggregation networks, where necessary VRFs, access-lists are set up, to the WAN, where paths that satisfy these performance requirements are set up.

In this talk, Cengiz will give an overview of some of the new protocol and open-source developments, such as IETF’s NETCONF/YANG, I2RS policy associations, and PCEP, and how they can be orchestrated together to achieve this end-to-end service activation. To gain maximum network efficiency, the industry also needs extreme topology and performance telemetry from different layers of the network. In addition, analytics algorithms are needed to find resources in the network to run these services even under heavy load. He will illustrate how to overlay different traffic matrices, one for each service class, on top of each other with their own separate optimization algorithms in order to yield optimum multi-service delivery networks.
